Rules for Game of the Goose
The object of the game is to be the first to reach square 63. Each player may roll the dice per turn and move the pawn as many squares as they roll.
The game board has a number of boxes with a special meaning:
- 6-bridge: continue to 12
- 19 tavern: skip 1 turn
- 31-well: skip 2 turns
- 42-maze or thornbush: go back to 39
- 52-prison: skip 2 turns
- 58-death: go back to start
- 63- end: whoever gets here first has won
Some boxes show a goose (the ninefolds and the ninefolds minus four), these are the boxes 5, 9, 14, 18, 23, 27, 32, 36, 41, 45, 50, 54, 59. Whoever lands on this must continue to count the same number of pips. It is therefore not possible for a player to stand on a square with a goose after his turn.
Whoever throws too many eyes and would therefore pass 63, must walk back from 63. It is then possible that the player ends up on square 58 or 52. If the player lands on a square with a goose when counting back, the player counts back the number of pips thrown.
Whoever rolls a 5 and a 4 on the first roll goes straight to 53. Whoever rolls a 6 and a 3 on the first roll goes on to 26. If this rule didn't exist, these players would, through the geese, go straight to the end.
